Oliver.    I ntroduction In 1929 the Museum Book Store, London, offered for sale a collection of drawings attributed to Englishman Robert Marsh Westmacott (1801-1870). Westmacott's Drawing Book c.1840 contained sixteen topographic views and figure studies of New Zealand - known as  Aotearoa in the local Maori language -  from the early colonial period. The compilation of such an album, comprising prints, watercolours, pencil sketches and text, was a popular pastime amongst men and women of taste and travellers in search of the Picturesque during the eighteenth

Life & Times | Art - Lithographs | Art - Sketchbooks | Crimean archaeology 1855-6 | Mauritius & South Africa 1825-8 | South America 1851 & 1858 | New Zealand 1840 Robert Marsh Westmacott in South America and the Atlantic 1851 and 1858 Based largely on information contained within his various annotated artworks, we know that Robert Marsh Westmacott was working in South America during 1858 as a surveyor on the construction of a new railway line between Racife and the Sao Francisco River, near Pernambuco, Brazil. He also passed by Cape Horn in 1851, during the return voyage to England from Australia.  The following is a list of drawings taken by Westmacott during his time in South America. All the works are part of the National Library of Australia Nan Kivel collection. They can be viewed online at the Natipnal Library of Australia  website.  * Pernambuco 1. It was originally offered for sale as part of lots 634 and 901 in the Museum Book Store sale of 1929, from the Westmacott family collection. It contained views of Mauritius (1825-26), Brazil (1858), Lisbon, Marseilles and Abyssinia. According to the Museum Book Store catalogue, 12 views of Mauritius were offered for sale as part of lot 634; and 25 drawings of "Brazils, South America and other places" were offered with lot 901.
